Based in, Nara, Japan, Mauna Kea use natural materials, but primarily it's their mix of Hemp and Cotton socks that they are best known for. The socks are knitted on vintage machinery in a tubular shape, therefore, the comfort of the sock is not determined by the pattern but by the knit and thickness of yarn. A standard knitting machine uses 170-180 stitches, whereas their machines which have been in use for over 25 years, use 60 stitches. The loose knit means thicker yarn can be used, and the flexibility afforded by the low gauge makes the sock more comfortable, as it takes the shape of each unique wearer… and we think that’s pretty cool.
